Pencil Grasp Development Handout

This is a 2 page handout focusing on the development of pencil grasp. This is perfect for occupational therapists to give to parents, teachers, paraprofessionals and other staff. This features clipart showing each grasp (page 1) and then description of each grasp (page 2). You can laminate this, so you can use this in meetings or in your toolbox of visuals. Please read my description carefully before you download.

The grasps are:

Palmar supinate grasp (Ages 1-2. The crayon or marker is held in the palm. The thumb is facing up towards the ceiling. The child is using large muscles to draw such as their shoulder or arm.)

Digital Pronate (Ages 2 – 3.5 The crayon or marker is starting to be held with fingers. The thumb is facing down towards the paper. The child is using large muscles such as their shoulder or arm to draw.)

Static tripod or quadrupod (Age 3.5 – 4.5 (The child now holds the marker or crayon with a tripod grasp (held with the first two fingers and tool rests on 3rd finger ) or quadrupod grasp (tool held with first three, tool rests on 4th finger). However, the movements still come from the larger muscles such as the shoulder or arm. The wrist and forearm may not rest on the table.)

Dynamic quadrupod or tripod (Age 4.5 – 5 years old The child holds the marker or crayon with a tripod grasp (held with the first two fingers and tool rests on 3rd finger) or quadrupod grasp (tool held with first three, tool rests on 4th finger). The other fingers are tucked into the palm. The hand/forearm rest on the table.)
