Integrating the Rooting Reflex Through Play-Based Activities

Support oral-motor readiness, body awareness, and sensory – motor organization – through gentle, child-led play.

This comprehensive resource is designed to help integrate the Rooting Reflex  an early oral-motor reflex that helps infants locate the breast or bottle for feeding. It is triggered by light touch to the cheek or side of the mouth, guiding the head to turn, open, and latch. When this reflex remains active beyond infancy, it can influence feeding skills, posture, attention, oral sensitivity, and even emotional regulation.

With 28 playful, sensory-rich oral-motor and whole-body activities, this guide equips therapists, educators, and caregivers with developmentally respectful strategies to support more intentional head turning, improved midline control, safer feeding patterns, and more organized responses to touch near the face. Each activity promotes gradual desensitization, purposeful motor planning, and improved body-brain connection – always through playful, child-centered experiences.

What’s Inside:

  • 28 play-based exercises targeting the Rooting Reflex
  • Step-by-step visuals and clear, simple directions for easy use
  • Activities that build intentional head-turning, midline stability, and tolerance for cheek/mouth-area touch
  • Sensory-rich strategies to support tactile processing, oral-motor organization, and early feeding readiness
  • Adaptations for a wide range of sensory, motor, and attention needs
  • “Why It Helps” explanations for every activity
  • Ideal for children who struggle with feeding, drooling, oral sensitivity, head turning, posture, or emotional reactivity to touch near the face

Whether you’re supporting toddlers, preschoolers, or school-aged children, this resource provides gentle, trust-based strategies to help the nervous system feel safe, organized, and confident. Integrating the Rooting Reflex lays the groundwork for successful feeding, communication, self-regulation, posture, and coordinated movement—all essential foundations for learning and play.

Because when the mouth feels safe and organized, the whole body follows.
