Moro Reflex — Startle → Safety → Co-Regulation
What it is & typical timeline
A protective startle to sudden change (sound, light, movement): inhale + extension → recover into flexion. Present at birth; typically settles by ~3–6 months.

Why it matters (OT • Educators • Parents)

- OTs: Links to arousal regulation, vestibular/visual comfort, state transitions.
- Educators: Bells/announcements, crowded hallways, sudden changes may trigger alarm → fatigue.
- Parents: Big jumps at small surprises, light/sound sensitivity, longer time to settle after being startled.
What you might notice (school-age)
- Exaggerated startle; covers ears/eyes; avoids assemblies; hard time ‘getting back on track’.
- Emotional spikes after surprises; prefers predictable routines and quieter spaces.
Quick observational screen (non-diagnostic)
Looking for more information on screening? Check out handouts here!
- For one week, log 3 common triggers (e.g., bell, vacuum, sudden touch).
- Record approximate recovery time to re-engage with a task (in seconds/minutes).
- Note supports used (breath, pressure, quiet corner) and which the child chose.
Do / Don’t (language & approach)
- Do preview surprises when possible (visual or verbal ‘heads-up’).
- Do pair breath + pressure + predictability (same short sequence every time).
- Don’t label startle as ‘overreaction’ or ‘attention-seeking’—it’s a safety check.
Classroom supports (Tier 1 • Tier 2 • Tier 3)
- Tier 1 (whole class): Predictable countdowns, visual heads-up cards, soft-entry options after alarms.
- Tier 2 (small group): Teach 3-step reset (hug pillow → 3 slow breaths → anchor task).
- Tier 3 (individual): Noise-dampening headphones, individualized ‘opt-out and return’ plan, staff cue sheet.
Home carryover ideas
- Soft-start mornings: dim lights, one voice, 3 slow breaths together.
- Create a ‘surprise plan’: name it → breathe → squeeze pillow/blanket → choose when to re-enter.
- Post-event anchor: simple soothing task (sort 5 items, match 3 picture cards).
Play-based activities & progressions (short bouts; child-led)
Looking for a FULL packet of 33 MORO activities? Click here to check out my MORO resource.
- Turtle-Shell Breathing (30–60 s): hug a pillow, inhale 3, exhale 4–5; add gentle rocking.
- Heavy-Work Trio: wall push, chair push, book carry (20–30 s each).
- Slow Vestibular Dose: child-led rocking/swing; stop sign in child’s hand to control end.
- Visual Calm Spot: hat/visor; soft gaze at a fixed point for a count of 10.
- Predictable Startle Game: adult drops soft beanbag behind back after ‘3-2-1’; child practices plan.
Data you can track (simple, actionable)
- Average recovery time after known trigger.
- Child self-rating (‘easy to settle?’ 1–5).
- Independent use of the plan (Y/N) and which step they chose first.
Collaboration & self-advocacy scripts
- Adult→Child: “That was loud. Let’s do your turtle plan—hug, breathe, then you pick when to go back.”
- Teacher→Team: “Bells spike J’s arousal; team will trial heads-up visuals + 3-step reset for 2 weeks.”
